This was a fun collection of essays about America and the movies! I’d only heard of Vowell’s books that had fairly strong central concepts that dictated most of the chapters, so I was surprised by the variety of subjects she covers here. Vowell’s writing is effortlessly funny and eminently readable. This book is particularly skilled at gradually introducing you to its author through small details in each chapter. Taken one by one, we only get a rough sketch of Vowell’s personality; taken as a whole, the person on the other side of the page starts to come into focus. Bonus points go to Vowell for being perhaps the first person ever to persuasively explain that Al Gore is likable.
